Crisis and safety protocol
Eyva — Crisis and Safety Protocol
This page explains what Eyva does when something you write suggests you may be in danger, which help it points you to, how it avoids keeping you hooked, and how to reach a real person. It is published under California Business and Professions Code §22602(b) and §22604, New York General Business Law §1701, and Washington ESHB 2225 §5.
Eyva is not a crisis service and cannot call anyone for you. If you are in danger right now, call your local emergency number — 911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK, 112 in the EU and Türkiye.
1. What Eyva listens for
Before any AI model sees your message, code on your Mac reads it for:
- Suicide and self-harm: a first-person statement of wanting to die or to hurt yourself, and quieter signs such as wishing you would not wake up, or that nobody would miss you if you were gone. One clear statement is enough. Two quieter signs within three of your messages are enough too.
- Eating disorders: making yourself throw up, starving yourself or not eating on purpose, using laxatives or diuretics to lose weight, eating under 1,000 calories a day, or saying you do not deserve to eat.
Once it has fired, Eyva keeps it in place for your next eight messages, because a hard conversation does not end with one sentence.
It does not fire on figures of speech ("this deadline is killing me"), on someone else's words in quotation marks, on a film, song or book, on a clear "I'm not going to hurt myself", or on a joke you mark as one.
2. What Eyva does
When it fires, Eyva's answer always carries a block of text written in advance and added by code, never by the AI model:
- it asks you to reach a real person now;
- it names the crisis line checked for the region your Mac is set to:
- United States: call or text 988 (988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline);
- Canada: call or text 988 (9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline);
- United Kingdom and Ireland: call Samaritans free on 116 123;
- it names the emergency number for that region (911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK, 112 in the EU and Türkiye);
- where your region is not set, or Eyva has no checked line for it, it names findahelpline.com, which lists free, confidential crisis lines for every country, and the emergency numbers above — it never gives a number from memory;
- it says plainly that it is not a crisis service and cannot call anyone, and that it is staying with you while you reach someone.
For an eating disorder the same lines are given, in words about your body and today rather than tonight.
The AI model's own words are checked before you see them. On the first answer after Eyva hears something serious, the model does not speak first: a fixed sentence written in advance opens the answer. After that, if the model's reply mentions means or methods of self-harm, accepts a goodbye, jokes, welcomes what you said, or treats it as a plan — or, for an eating disorder, mentions calories, weight targets, purging, laxatives or appetite suppressants — the reply is replaced by that fixed sentence. Any phone number the model wrote itself is removed; the only numbers you are given are the checked ones above.
This works the same whichever model answers — the one on your Mac or the cloud model — because the check runs on your Mac before either is asked. If no model can answer at all, the block is still shown.
Eyva never contacts anyone on its own — not a crisis line, not the police, not your family.
3. People under 18
Eyva is made for adults, and companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors. On first launch Eyva asks whether you are 18 or older. If you answer that you are under 18, or tell Eyva in your own words that you are, Eyva stops holding conversations on that Mac: no AI model is asked anything again, and every message is answered by text written in advance. If that message suggests you may be in danger, the crisis block above comes first. Eyva also reminds a person under 18, at least every hour, that it is an AI and not a human, and that it is a good moment to take a break.
4. How Eyva avoids keeping you hooked
- It always says it is an AI. At the start of each conversation, and at least every three hours of a continuing one, Eyva shows a line saying you are talking with an AI, not a human. It is added by code and cannot be switched off.
- It turns you toward people. When you tell Eyva that it is the only one you talk to, code on your Mac notices before the model answers, and any sentence in the reply that encourages you to rely on Eyva alone or pull away from other people is removed. If nothing in the reply points you to someone in your life, Eyva adds one sentence that does.
- It does not call you back for company. Anything Eyva starts on its own goes through a daily limit, a minimum spacing between messages and quiet hours, and Eyva has no message whose purpose is to bring you back to talk.
- It is never a romantic partner.
5. How to reach a person
Eyva cannot connect you to a human. The crisis lines above are answered by trained people, day and night. For questions about Eyva itself, write to support@conserius.com — that address is not a crisis service and is not watched around the clock.
6. Referral counts
California (from 1 July 2027) and Washington (from 1 January 2027) ask operators to report how many times crisis referrals were shown. Eyva runs on your Mac and does not send us your conversations, so this version does not count referrals. When counting is added, it will be a plain number kept on your Mac, which you can see before anything about it is sent, and nothing else about the conversation will be counted or sent.
7. Honest limits
- Eyva reads fixed phrases in English and Turkish. A crisis said in other words, or in another language, may not be detected.
- These phrase lists were written from the signs crisis services describe; they are not a clinically validated screening instrument.
- Eyva does not read a crisis about someone else, such as a friend or a child.
- The region is the one your Mac is set to. If it is not set, Eyva cannot name 988 or another national line and gives findahelpline.com and the emergency numbers instead.
- A crisis line that has not been re-checked on its operator's own page for 90 days is no longer named; Eyva gives the emergency number and findahelpline.com in its place until it is checked again.
- Eyva cannot call anyone.
